A typical day transforms into an abstract tale of reciprocity. Two characters experience separate journeys through the same space. Their resolves tested when the landscape takes on a life of its own, reflecting the phenomena described by Freud’s, ‘Theory of the Uncanny’. Varying responses set them on separate paths, leading to a climactic culmination.

Fereshteh explores the practice of “Sigheh” practised in the Shiite sect of Islam and draws parallels with the one-night stands of the Western world. The film centers on an Iranian documentary filmmaker who has a chance meeting with her ex fiancé, David that leads to a reunion where she must question her identity to find liberation.

Elegant, witty, and beautifully paced, the film tracks four heroine’s journey’s: Huriyya and her sisters from Sydney’s Western suburbs. Muslim girls who may or may not wear headscarves and one with a mass of tangled red hair that curls into Arabic script.
